Background of the Study
Modern agricultural activities in Ogoja have transformed the rural landscape, often encroaching upon ancient settlement sites. These activities, including intensive farming and land clearance, have inadvertently led to the degradation of archaeological layers that hold crucial historical information (Okoro, 2023). Agricultural expansion often results in the disturbance of stratified deposits and the loss of contextual data essential for reconstructing past human activities (Ekanem, 2024). Furthermore, the introduction of modern farming machinery and chemicals can accelerate the deterioration of fragile cultural materials. Recent studies emphasize the need to balance economic development with heritage conservation, as the loss of archaeological contexts not only diminishes historical knowledge but also disrupts community ties to ancestral lands (Udoh, 2025). This investigation examines the impact of current agricultural practices on the integrity of ancient settlement sites in Ogoja. It advocates for integrative land-use policies that protect archaeological sites while supporting sustainable agricultural practices, thereby ensuring that both heritage and modern needs are addressed in a balanced manner.
Statement of the Problem
Ancient settlement sites in Ogoja are increasingly jeopardized by modern agricultural practices. The expansion of farmlands and the use of heavy machinery have led to significant disturbances in archaeological deposits, resulting in the loss of valuable cultural data. Inadequate regulatory frameworks and limited awareness among farmers contribute to the problem, hindering the preservation of historical contexts. This study seeks to investigate the extent of agricultural impacts on ancient sites and to propose strategies that reconcile economic development with archaeological conservation (Akpan, 2023).

Its findings will assist policymakers in developing integrated strategies that safeguard archaeological resources while promoting sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring that historical knowledge is preserved for future generations (Etim, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the effects of modern agricultural practices on ancient settlement sites in Ogoja Local Government Area and does not extend to urban development issues.
